Pairs well with avocados, hash browns, tater tots and sliced fresh tomatoes.

I have always coated both sides of sliced bread in melted butter before toasting both sides in a skillet on top of the stove.ย  Depending on my mood, sometimes the toast is dark brown (semi-charred) or lightly toasted as pictured.ย  This method works for me because the toast is soft.ย  Using the broiler or a toaster oven is good if you like crispy toast.

After flipping the skillet toast,ย  sprinkle on shredded cheddar cheeseย ย  It quickly melts while the bottom is browning.ย  Placing shredded cheddar cheese on buttered/toasted bread tastes MUCH better than “un-toasted” in my opinion.

Who else LOVES chunky meat on pizza?ย  For this recipe, I sprinkled chopped smoky bratwurst on top of the cheddar cheese and eggs.ย  If you prefer smaller chunks, make it your way and enjoy every bite.

Who invented pizza?

According to wonderopolis.org, baker Raffaele Esposito from Naples is often given credit for making the first pizza pie. However, historians claim street vendors in Naples sold flatbreads with toppings many years before then.

Whatever the case, I’m delighted someone invented pizza!!ย ย

Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889 and asked Esposito to make them a pizza. He topped the pizza with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil. Today, that pizza is still known as Pizza Margherita.

Gennaro Lombardi opened G. Lombardi’s, the first United States pizzeria,ย  in 1905.ย  He opened his restaurant at 53 1/3 Spring Street in New York City. It is still open today using its original oven.

Serve with bottled water or any of the following over crushed ice:ย  apple juice, mango juice, orange juice, peach juice, lemonade, ginger ale or your favorite soda.

Helpful Tips For Beginners:ย  How To Read & Follow Any Recipe

Reading a recipe is an important life skill thatย  requires knowing how to read a recipeโ€™s ingredients, follow the instructions, prep ingredients, and what type of equipment to use.ย

The following tips will help beginners or experienced cooks use a recipe to create a delicious dish.ย

Start with clean hands and organized kitchen.ย  Wash hands thoroughly.ย  Make sure kitchen and countertops are clean before making a recipe.

Create a relaxing environment.ย  Play favorite music while in the kitchen.ย  I love listening to classical or gospel music.ย

Read the entire recipe from start to finish.ย  Visualize doing each step which will help you follow each step.ย

If you see ingredient that you and your family donโ€™t use for whatever reason, try a substitute or omit the ingredient.

Pay attention to the order in which ingredients are prepped.ย  For example, 1 cup ofย  chopped pecans is not the same as walnuts, chopped (measure whole walnuts and then chop).ย ย

Know the assumptions.ย  For example, when my recipe calls for โ€œsugar,โ€ use granulated sugar.ย  If brown sugar is an ingredient, it will be written that way in the recipe.ย ย

Figure out the timing. Check the listed โ€œprep timeโ€ and โ€œtotal timeโ€ to be sure you have enough time to complete the recipe.

Look for hints, such as the words โ€œmeanwhileโ€ or โ€œat the same time,โ€ which indicate two or more steps can happen simultaneously.ย ย

Watch Recipe Videos.ย  ย  If youโ€™re a visual learner (like me), watch recipe videos.ย  Perfect for when youโ€™re learning a new skill or just want to see how a recipe is made.ย  ย ย

Mise en placeย is a super time saver. This French cooking term translates as โ€œputting in place.โ€ย  ย It means prepping/measuring ingredients and chopping food before you start cooking. Itโ€™s the perfect way to get organized, use each ingredient and complete each step.ย  Nothing is overlooked.

Organize your tools and kitchen equipment.ย ย Mise en placeย isnโ€™t just for ingredients.ย  ย Before starting, make sure you have parchment paper, aluminum foil, measuring cups, measuring spoons, the right pans, mixing bowls, and other equipment.

Kitchen Supplies Sifter

Make notes in yourย recipe. Note any special prep instructions and highlight cooking times.ย  Make note of ingredients omitted,ย  favorite substitutions and creative twists.ย  ย The notes will be helpful the next time you make this recipe.ย

Enjoy!

Prep Time15 minutes mins
Cook Time20 minutes mins
Total Time35 minutes mins
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter or margarine melted
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 4 slices bread, whole wheat or white or preferred
  • 2 cups low-moisture mozzarella cheese, shredded Use more or less as preferred.
  • 4 medium eggs, scrambled seasoned with salt and pepper
  • 1-1/2 cup sausage, cooked and crumbled Pork or turkey. I used bratwurst.
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Use more or less as preferred.
  • red pepper flakes for garnish optional
  • parmesan cheese, grated optional

Instructions

  • In medium bowl, combine melted butter, garlic powder (if using), onion powder (if using) and Italian seasoning. Melt butter or margarine in a large cast iron skillet or pan over low-medium heat.
  • Brush both sides of sliced bread with butter mixture. You will have 4 slices of "buttered" bread. Coat 4 slices of bread on both sides with melted butter.
  • Place four slices in a large pan on top of stove. "Lightly" brown over low-medium heat.
  • Flip over. Toast until "light" golden brown (about 1 minute). Turn OFF heat.
  • Sprinkle about 1/4 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over top of each slice of bread.
  • Top with scrambled eggs.
  • Top with about 3 tablespoons of cooked/scrambled sausage. Add more or less if desired.
  • Sprinkle with remaining shredded mozzarella cheese. Add more or less if desired.
  • Carefully place 4 slices of pizza toast in an ungreased cookie sheet or use an ungreased baking pan.
  • Place under broiler for 1 minute or until cheese is melted. Watch closely to prevent edges of toast from burning.
  • Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese (optional) and sprinkle with red pepper flakes (optional). Serve hot.
