French Toast Breakfast Sandwich is a hearty main dish made with cooked sausage patties sandwiched between two slices of French toast.ย
It’s drizzled with honey and lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar.ย
Also good drizzled with Homemade Maple Pancake Syrup.
Pairs well with hash browns and scrambled eggs.ย

The inspiration for this recipe started early one morning when I needed a hearty breakfast before editing a series of recipe videos.ย I can concentrate better after eating.ย No stomach growls (laugh)!
After a quick brainstorm, I decided to combine two favorites:ย French toast and sausage.ย ย Using available ingredients, I whipped up a French Toast Breakfast Sandwich for breakfast.
Restaurants serve French toast with butter (not margarine), maple syrup and powdered sugar. ย The possibilities are endless. French toast can be topped with just about anything.
According to the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, French toast originatedย in France, where it is known as โameriteโ or โpain perduโ (lost bread).
What’s lost bread? Originally, French toast was made from stale bread that would otherwise been thrown away.
The phrase โFrench toastโ first appeared in print in the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink in 1871.
According to JustFunFacts.com, French toast is a dish made of sliced bread soaked in eggs and milk, then fried (usually in unsalted butter).
Alternative names include Spanish toast, German toast, nunโs toast, eggy bread, torrija, poor knights of Windsor, Bombay toast and several others.
In France, the dish is called โpain perdu,โ meaning โlost bread.โ
Why lost bread? Originally, people made French toast from stale bread in order to make use of bread that would otherwise have been thrown away.
In Scotland, French toast is traditionally served with sausage between two slices of French toast, eaten as a sandwich. It is also sometimes eaten with ketchup in Great Britain.

Pay attention to the order in which ingredients are prepped.ย For example, 1 cup ofย chopped pecans is not the same as pecans, chopped (measure whole pecans and then chop).ย ย
Know the assumptions.ย For example, when my recipe calls for โsugar,โ use granulated sugar.ย If brown sugar is an ingredient, it will be written as such in the recipe.ย ย
Figure out the timing. Check the listed โprep timeโ and โtotal timeโ to be sure you have enough time to complete the recipe.
Look for hints, such as the words โmeanwhileโ or โat the same time,โ which indicate two or more steps can happen simultaneously.ย ย
For example, my prep time doesnโt include bringing cold butter up to room temperature.ย Be sure to include in your timetable.

Mise en placeย is a super time saver. This French cooking term translates as โputting in place.โย ย It means prepping/measuring ingredients and chopping food before you start cooking. Itโs the perfect way to get organized and avoid missing an ingredient or missing a step in the instructions.
Organize your tools and kitchen equipment.ย ย Mise en placeย isnโt just for ingredients.ย ย Before starting, make sure you have parchment paper, aluminum foil, measuring cups, measuring spoons, the right pans, mixing bowls, and other equipment.
Make notes in yourย recipe. Note any special prep instructions and highlight cooking times.ย Make note of ingredients omitted,ย favorite substitutions and creative twists.ย ย The notes will be very helpful the next time you make this recipe.ย

French Toast Breakfast Sandwich
Ingredients
- 2 medium eggs, beaten
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons reduced fat or low-fat milk Or use heavy whipping cream or whole milk.
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
- 2 slices honey wheat bread
- 2 sausage patties, cooked Cook patties according to instructions on package.
- honey for drizzling
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar for garnish Use more or less.
Instructions
- In a pie plate (or similar dish), combine eggs, vanilla, milk, ground cinnamon (if using), black pepper (if using), and salt (if using).
- Stir vigorously with a fork until well combined. Soak each slice in mixture. Flip each slice over with a spatula to prevent tearing. Leave in pie plate.
- Melt butter in a skillet over low-medium heat.
- Use spatula to move soaked bread slices from pie plate to skillet with melted butter. Cook 3-4 minutes over low-medium heat. Flip over. Cook another 3-4 minutes. Both slices should be golden brown on both sides.
- Turn heat off.
- Use spatula to move French toast from skillet to plate. Place two cooked sausage patties on one slice. Top with second slice.
- Drizzle sandwich with honey. Sprinkle with powdered sugar (optional). Serve hot.
