French toast was created by medieval European cooks who wanted to feed their families without wasting food.ย They knew stale bread could be revived when moistened and heated.ย The smart cooks added eggs for additional moisture, protein and flavor.
Medieval French toast recipes suggest this meal was enjoyed by the wealthy because a key ingredient is white bread with the crusts trimmed off.ย It was the most expensive bread available at the time.ย
French toast recipes can also be traced to Ancient Roman times. One of the original French names for this dish is le pain รก la Romaine, or Roman bread.
According to the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, French toast does have its origins in France, where it is known as โameriteโ or โpain perduโ (lost bread).

Easy French Toast Sticks
Ingredients
- 4 slices honey wheat bread or use preferred bread
- 4 medium eggs, beaten
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream or use whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg or use ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar (optional)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter or use margarine
- honey, maple syrup or buttery pancake syrup for drizzling
Instructions
- Stack together 4 slices of bread. Cut into 3 strips. Will have 12 total strips. Set aside.
- In medium bowl, combine beaten eggs, heavy cream (or milk), vanilla extract, ground nutmeg, black pepper (if using) and granulated sugar (if using). Stir with fork until evenly combined. Set aside.
- Melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter (or margarine) in a 9" skillet over low medium heat. Use a spatula to spread melted butter evenly over skillet.
- While butter is melting, quickly dip SIX "sticks" into egg mixture. Do not soak because bread might fall apart.
- Remove wet sticks from egg mixture with spatula and place in skillet with hot melted butter.
- Cook 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Flip over again and cook 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Place on plate or platter.
- Melt last tablespoon of unsalted butter (or margarine) in skillet. Repeat process for last SIX sticks.
- Serve hot. Drizzle with honey, maple syrup or favorite buttery pancake syrup.
