I often whip up a batch for a light meal.  The sticks are easy to pick up, dip in syrup and eat while editing or doing some research on my laptop. Inspired to share the recipe with you when I made some recently.  I hope you enjoy as much as I do!

This is the perfect recipe for fresh or slightly stale sliced bread.  If stale bread has mold (dark spots) do not use.  Discard in trash.  Just sharing this helpful tip for aspiring young cooks who will appreciate it.  🙂

I cut slightly stale sliced bread into 3 strips to make Easy French Toast Sticks.  Super simple and delicious.

Fascinating French Toast Facts

National French Toast Day is November 28th.

French toast was created by medieval European cooks who wanted to feed their families without wasting food.  They knew stale bread could be revived when moistened and heated.  The smart cooks added eggs for additional moisture, protein and flavor.

An open bag of sliced bread is closed with a clothespin. It is super easy for my aunt to open because she has rheumatoid arthritis (twisted fingers).

Medieval French toast recipes suggest this meal was enjoyed by the wealthy because a key ingredient is white bread with the crusts trimmed off.  It was the most expensive bread available at the time.

French toast recipes can also be traced to Ancient Roman times. One of the original French names for this dish is le pain á la Romaine, or Roman bread.

According to the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, French toast does have its origins in France, where it is known as “amerite” or “pain perdu” (lost bread).

The phrase “French toast” first appeared in print in the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink in 1871.

In Scotland, a favorite meal is sausage  sandwiched between two slices of French toast.
