Easy French Toast Sticks are quick and easy to make with simple ingredients.

Drizzle with honey, maple syrup or your favorite buttery pancake syrup.

Great for breakfast, brunch or lunch.

Perfect recipe for fresh or slightly stale sliced bread.  If stale bread has mold (dark spots) trash it.

Sandwich bread sliced into 3 strips used to make Easy French Toast Sticks.

Quick and easy.

HELPFUL TIP

Consider using an old-fashioned clothespin to close a bag of sandwich bread.

Easy to open for adults with rheumatoid arthritis (works for my aunt).

Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 4 slices honey wheat bread or use preferred bread
  • 4 medium eggs, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream or use whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg or use ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter or use margarine
  • honey, maple syrup or buttery pancake syrup for drizzling

Method

  1. Stack together 4 slices of bread. Cut into 3 strips. Will have 12 total strips. Set aside.
  2. In medium bowl, combine beaten eggs, heavy cream (or milk), vanilla extract, ground nutmeg, black pepper (if using) and granulated sugar (if using). Stir with fork until evenly combined. Set aside.
  3. Melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter (or margarine) in a 9" skillet over low medium heat. Use a spatula to spread melted butter evenly over skillet.
  4. While butter is melting, quickly dip SIX "sticks" into egg mixture. Do not soak because bread might fall apart.
  5. Remove wet sticks from egg mixture with spatula and place in skillet with hot melted butter.
  6. Cook 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Flip over again and cook 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Place on plate or platter.
  7. Melt last tablespoon of unsalted butter (or margarine) in skillet. Repeat process for last SIX sticks.
  8. Serve hot. Drizzle with honey, maple syrup or favorite buttery pancake syrup.
