This nourishing side dish is full of savory flavor.  Quick and easy to make with frozen spinach, chopped onions and seasonings.

Spinach is a leafy green vegetable packing high amounts of carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, iron, and calcium.

Spinach pairs well with a variety of main dishes including baked pork chops, barbecue, fried chicken, meatloaf, pot roast, and fried fish.

My aunt LOVES well seasoned spinach with a LOT of onions and butter.

She buys frozen spinach simply because it is quick and easy to prepare.

Please note homegirl will also gobble up fresh spinach whenever it is served.   Which is a very good thing!  🙂

How To Buy Fresh Spinach

Spinach is sold fresh in bunches or pre-washed in bags, frozen, and canned.

Available year-round in grocery stores.

When buying whole bunches of spinach, look for crisp and dark green leaves.  Avoid yellow, limp, or wilted leaves.

Avoid buying packaged spinach with slimy or yellow leaves.  Always check the expiration or  “best if used by” date.

Spinach is very versatile and often used raw in salads or cooked in a variety of dishes such as quiches, soups, and soufflés.  Also a good side dish.

Never cook spinach in a pot or pan with an aluminum interior because it will discolor.

There are three types of spinach according to Bon Appetit:

  • Savoy spinach has curly or heavily wrinkled dark green leaves.
  • Semi-savoy spinach is less wrinkly and good to use in cooking.
  • Flat-leaf spinach is smooth-textured.  Great in salads and is best eaten raw. Baby spinach is a type of flat-leaf spinach.
Why does spinach make Popeye strong?

In 1870, Erich von Wolf, a German chemist, examined the amount of iron in spinach

When Popeye was created, studio executives recommended he eat spinach for his strength, due to its vaunted health properties.
