Stack together 4 slices of bread. Cut into 3 strips. Will have 12 total strips. Set aside.
In medium bowl, combine beaten eggs, heavy cream (or milk), vanilla extract, ground nutmeg, black pepper (if using) and granulated sugar (if using). Stir with fork until evenly combined. Set aside.
Melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter (or margarine) in a 9" skillet over low medium heat. Use a spatula to spread melted butter evenly over skillet.
While butter is melting, quickly dip SIX "sticks" into egg mixture. Do not soak because bread might fall apart.
Remove wet sticks from egg mixture with spatula and place in skillet with hot melted butter.
Cook 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Flip over again and cook 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Place on plate or platter.
Melt last tablespoon of unsalted butter (or margarine) in skillet. Repeat process for last SIX sticks.
Serve hot. Drizzle with honey, maple syrup or favorite buttery pancake syrup.
