Interesting tuna facts from a New York Times article…
Tuna comes in ”solid,” ”chunk” and ”flaked” varieties. A can of tuna labeled ”solid” or ”solid pack” should contain one whole piece of tuna loin. ”Chunk” should contain chunks of tuna, which are pieces of the loin that broke off during the processing of ”solid pack” tuna. Cans of ”flaked” tuna are full of all the pieces left over from the chunks.
Tuna packed in oil, either vegetable oil or olive oil, is usually cooked, fish and oil together, in the can. Many tuna producers contend that oil-processed tuna is always better and that water leaches out flavor.
I prefer chunk light tuna packed in water. Tastes better in my opinion. If you prefer packed in oil, I respect that. We all have different tastes. Nothing wrong with that.

I LOVE my Mt. Olive Sweet Salad Cubes. For this recipe, I opened the last complimentary jar in a package shipped to me from the company a short while ago. This has been my favorite brand for many, many years. Sweet salad cubes add crunch and a milk sweetness. Very good!
Homegirl's Tuna Salad
- 1 can (5 ounces) chunk light tuna packed in water Drained.
- salt and ground black pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 cup chopped yellow onions
- 2-1/2 tablespoons sweet salad cubes
- 2-1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- Thoroughly drain "chunk light tuna" before placing in a medium-sized bowl. Stir with a fork to separate chunks into small pieces.
- Add all remaining ingredients. Stir until well combined. Serve immediately. Or place in lidded container and refrigerate until ready to use.
- Enjoy from a bowl or slathered on your favorite toasted bread.
- Serving Suggestion (Optional): Garnish with sliced hard boiled eggs, sprinkle with salt, black pepper and paprika.
