How To Buy Fresh Spinach
Spinach is sold fresh in bunches or pre-washed in bags, frozen, and canned.
Available year-round in grocery stores.
When buying whole bunches of spinach, look for crisp and dark green leaves. Avoid yellow, limp, or wilted leaves.
Avoid buying packaged spinach with slimy or yellow leaves. Always check the expiration or “best if used by” date.
Spinach is very versatile and often used raw in salads or cooked in a variety of dishes such as quiches, soups, and soufflés. Also a good side dish.
Never cook spinach in a pot or pan with an aluminum interior because it will discolor.
There are three types of spinach according to Bon Appetit:
Savoy spinach has curly or heavily wrinkled dark green leaves.
Semi-savoy spinach is less wrinkly and good to use in cooking.
Flat-leaf spinach is smooth-textured. Great in salads and is best eaten raw. Baby spinach is a type of flat-leaf spinach.
