Instructions
  1. In a large pot or dutch oven, prepare beans according to instructions printed on package. I suggest overnight soak method and cooking with a smoked ham hock or smoked turkey necks. Simmer until beans are firm (not mushy).
  2. Add chopped sausage, ground beef, crumbled bacon (optional), chopped green bell peppers, chopped onions, 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of barbecue sauce, and Liquid Smoke.
  3. Stir until well combined.
  4. Add chili powder, garlic powder (if using), onion powder and ground cumin (seeds or powder), chili powder, salt and black pepper to taste.
  5. Stir until well combined.
  6. Simmer over low heat for 10 minutes with lid on pot. Stir carefully to avoid breaking beans.
  7. Taste. If desired, add remaining brown sugar and smoked barbecue sauce and a dash or two of Tabasco sauce.
  8. Serve hot.
