-  Prepare beans per instructions printed on package. For this recipe, I suggest overnight soak method (greatly reduces gas).
- Â Simmer beans with a smoked ham hock or smoked turkey necks.
- Â Cook beans until firm (not mushy) because they must simmer more in this recipe.

15 Bean Smoked BBQ Sausage Soup

Ingredients
15 Bean Smoked BBQ Sausage Soup
- 1 package (20 ounces) 15 Bean Ham Soup, cooked I use Hurst's Ham Beens Brand.
- 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes and juice
- 1 cup cooked sausage, thinly sliced Use pork or turkey.
- 1-1/2 cup ground beef or ground turkey, cooked
- 1 cup bacon, coarsely crumbled (optional)
- 1/2 cup green bell peppers, chopped Seeds and ribs removed.
- 1 large white onion, chopped
- 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, divided
- 1/4 cup smoked barbecue sauce, divided
- 3 tablespoons Liquid Smoke
Spices
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (or powder)
- 1 teaspoon chili powder mild or hot
- salt and black pepper to taste
- NOTE: Add a dash or two of Tabasco sauce if desired.
Instructions
- In a large pot or dutch oven, prepare beans according to instructions printed on package. I suggest overnight soak method and cooking with a smoked ham hock or smoked turkey necks. Simmer until beans are firm (not mushy).
- Add chopped sausage, ground beef, crumbled bacon (optional), chopped green bell peppers, chopped onions, 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of barbecue sauce, and Liquid Smoke.
- Stir until well combined.
- Add chili powder, garlic powder (if using), onion powder and ground cumin (seeds or powder), chili powder, salt and black pepper to taste.
- Stir until well combined.
- Simmer over low heat for 10 minutes with lid on pot. Stir carefully to avoid breaking beans.
- Taste. If desired, add remaining brown sugar and smoked barbecue sauce and a dash or two of Tabasco sauce.
- Serve hot.
